Short answer

Most everyday moving violations are 2 points in North Dakota. Careless driving and passing a school bus are 6. Driving without insurance is 6, 12 or 14. Reckless driving is 8. Speeding runs from 0 to 15 depending on your speed. Twelve points suspends your license.

How many points is each violation?

From NDCC 39-06.1-10. The last column shows whether you can elect a course in lieu of points, which is limited to violations worth 5 points or fewer.

Which violations carry no points?

  • Driving without a license
  • Overtime and double parking under city ordinances
  • Speeding up to 10 over where the limit is 65 or less, and up to 5 over where it's higher

NDDOT says that for violations not on the schedule, no points are assigned.

Which points can a course keep off?

Those from a violation worth 5 points or fewer, if you elect the course at court when you post bond. Offenses worth 6 or more are excluded. So are the offenses listed in NDCC 39-06.1-05, including reckless driving, leaving the scene and driving under suspension.

Which points can a course take off afterward?

Any of them. The 3-point reduction applies to your total, whatever the points came from. It's limited to once in 12 months and 9 points in three years.

What happens at 12 points?

NDDOT suspends your license for 7 days, plus 7 days for each point over 12. For drivers under 18, the license is canceled at 6 points. See suspended for points.
