How many points is a no-insurance ticket?
| Situation | Points |
|---|---|
| Driving without liability insurance | 6 |
| Same, with a prior violation in the last 18 months | 12 |
| Found in the investigation of a crash, and the driver is the owner | 14 |
These are in NDCC 39-06.1-10.
What is the fee?
$150 for a first violation. $300 for a second or later violation within three years. Both are set in NDCC 39-06.1-06.
Can a no-insurance ticket suspend my license by itself?
Yes. Twelve points is a 7-day suspension. Fourteen points is 21 days. NDDOT also lists a $50 reinstatement fee for failing to maintain liability insurance.
Can I take a course to keep these points off?
Not at court. The in-lieu election is for violations worth 5 points or fewer, and this one starts at 6.
Can I take a course to reduce them afterward?
Yes. The 3-point reduction works on your total. After a first violation you'd go from 6 to 3.
If you're at 12 or more when NDDOT receives your certificate, the reduction is applied after you serve the suspension.
How long until the points are gone?
One point comes off for every three months without new points. Six points take 18 months to clear that way. With a course, 3 are gone as soon as NDDOT applies the certificate, and the other 3 clear in nine months.
What should I do now?
- Get insured and keep proof in the vehicle.
- Respond to the citation by the date on it.
- After the points post, take the course and email the certificate to drs@nd.gov.
- Order a $3 record to confirm your total.
