The state fee is $3 for each mile per hour over the limit, with a $20 minimum. Where the limit is posted above 65, it's $5 for each mile per hour. At 16 mph over or more, $20 is added. School zones start at $40 and work zones at $150.

Limit 65 or less
$3 per mph over, $20 minimum
Limit above 65
$5 per mph over, $20 minimum
16 mph over or more
Add $20
School zone
$40 minimum
Work zone, workers present
$150 minimum

How is a North Dakota speeding fee calculated?

NDCC 39-06.1-06 sets it: "a fee of twenty dollars, or three dollars for each mile per hour over the limit, whichever is greater." An additional $20 is assessed at 16 mph or more over the limit.

On a highway posted above 65, the rate is $5 for each mile per hour, with the same $20 minimum and the same $20 added at 16 over.

What does that come to?

Miles per hour over Limit 65 or less Limit above 65
5 $20 $25
10 $30 $50
15 $45 $75
16 $68 $100
20 $80 $120
25 $95 $145
30 $110 $170

We worked these out from the statute. Your citation shows the amount you owe. A city ordinance can set a different amount.

What about a school zone?

$40 for 1 to 10 mph over the posted speed. Above that, $40 plus $1 for each additional mile per hour, unless the regular fee would be higher.

What about a work zone?

$150 for 1 to 10 mph over, then $150 plus $2 for each mile per hour over 10. This applies only when workers are present and the sign says "Minimum Fee $150."

Is the fee the same as the bond?

Yes. The law says the bond "must be identical to the statutory fee." You can pay the fee, or post the bond and forfeit it. The amount is the same.

What else does the ticket cost?

Points, if you were more than 10 over (or more than 5 over where the limit is above 65). Twelve points suspends your license, and reinstatement after a points suspension is $50. Speeding ticket points has the schedule.

Can a course lower the fee?

No. If you elect a driver training course in lieu of points, the bond "is forfeited even though an election is made." The course keeps the points off. You also pay for the course. Ours is $24.99.

What if I don't pay?

If you do nothing, you're deemed to have admitted the violation. Failing to appear without paying the fee or posting bond is a class B misdemeanor, and NDDOT charges a $50 reinstatement fee for a suspension for failing to appear or post bond.
