How many points is a speeding ticket in North Dakota?

Can one speeding ticket suspend my license?

Yes. North Dakota suspends at 12 points. One ticket for 36 over in a 55 zone, or 31 over where the limit is above 65, is 12 points. The suspension is 7 days at 12 points and 7 more days for each point above that.

Do I still pay a ticket that has 0 points?

Yes. The fee is separate from the points. Ten over in a 55 zone is no points and a $30 fee. See what a speeding ticket costs.

Which speeding tickets can I keep off my record?

Any that are worth 5 points or fewer. You elect a driver training course at court when you post bond, and send NDDOT the certificate within 30 days.

That covers up to 25 over where the limit is 65 or less, and up to 20 over where the limit is higher. Faster than that and the ticket is worth more than 5 points, so the election isn't available.

What if the points are already on my record?

A defensive driving course takes 3 off, once every 12 months. Points also drop by 1 for every three months without new points.

How do I know which table applies?

Look at the posted limit where you were stopped. The higher table applies on a highway "on which the speed limit is posted in excess of sixty-five miles an hour."
