What this course does for a North Dakota driver, and how you get through it

A three-point reduction, once every twelve months

North Dakota Century Code 39-06.1-13(2) lets the director reduce a driver's accumulated points by three on completion of an approved course, once in any twelve-month period and no more than nine points in any three-year period. The reduction applies to points accumulated before completion.

A course in lieu of points for small violations

Under NDCC 39-06.1-10.1 a cited driver may elect at court, when posting bond, to complete an approved course instead of having the points entered. Available for violations carrying five points or fewer, once every twelve months. The bond is forfeited, and proof of completion must reach NDDOT within thirty days.

A certificate you send to NDDOT yourself

North Dakota has no provider reporting system. You receive a certificate on completion and deliver it to the Driver License Division by email or mail. NDDOT applies the reduction to your record.

In lieu of points

Elected the course at court? NDDOT needs your certificate within 30 days.

Under NDCC 39-06.1-10.1, a driver who elects an approved course in lieu of points must deliver proof of completion to NDDOT within thirty days of the election, or the points are entered. The course is four hours. Do not let the deadline be the reason.
