North Dakota tickets that carry no points
By Road Ready Safety · Checked against North Dakota law on
Short answer
Several common North Dakota tickets add no points: speeding up to 10 mph over where the limit is 65 or less, texting, seat belt violations and driving without a license. NDDOT's rule is that a violation not on the point schedule gets no points. You still owe the fee.

Which tickets have no points?
| Violation | Points | State fee |
|---|---|---|
| Speeding 1 to 10 over, limit 65 or less | 0 | $20 to $30 |
| Speeding 1 to 5 over, limit above 65 | 0 | $20 to $25 |

| Seat belt | Not on the schedule | $20 |

How do I know a ticket isn't on the schedule?
The schedule is in NDCC 39-06.1-10, and NDDOT publishes it on its points page with this note: "For violations not listed, no points are assigned."
Following too closely, for example, doesn't appear on it.
Do I still have to respond?
Yes. A ticket with no points is still a ticket. If you don't pay the fee, post bond or ask for a hearing, you're deemed to have admitted the violation. Failing to appear without paying or posting bond is a class B misdemeanor.
Should I elect a course for a no-point ticket?
No. The election keeps points off, and there are none. You'd use up your one election for the next 12 months.
Should I take a course anyway?
Only if you already have points. The 3-point reduction works on your existing total. If your record is clean, a course changes nothing on it.
Which tickets have the most points?
| Violation | Points |
|---|---|
| Fleeing a peace officer | 24 |
| Leaving the scene, injury or death | 18 |
| Speeding 46 or more over | 15 |
| Leaving the scene, property damage | 14 |
| Aggravated reckless driving | 12 |
