What is the school zone limit?
Twenty miles per hour "when passing a school during school recess or while children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours," unless local authorities post a lower speed.
What does a school zone ticket cost?
| Over the posted speed | Fee |
|---|---|
| 1 to 10 mph | $40 |
| 15 mph | $45 |
| 20 mph | $50 |
The law says the regular speeding fee applies if it would be greater. At 20 over, the regular fee is $80, so that's what you'd owe.
What does a work zone ticket cost?
| Over the posted speed | Fee |
|---|---|
| 1 to 10 mph | $150 |
| 15 mph | $160 |
| 20 mph | $170 |
| 25 mph | $180 |
When does the work zone fee apply?
Only when two things are true: people engaged in construction are present at the time and place, and the posted speed limit sign states "Minimum Fee $150." If either is missing, the regular speeding fee applies.
How many points?
The same as any speeding ticket at that speed. Where the limit is 65 or less, 1 to 10 over is 0 points, 11 to 15 is 1, 16 to 20 is 3, and 21 to 25 is 5.
Can a city charge more?
City ordinances can set their own amounts. The Fargo Municipal Court, for example, lists $80 for 1 to 10 over in school and construction zones, plus $2 for each mph above that. Your citation shows what you owe.
Can I keep the points off?
Yes, if the ticket is worth 5 points or fewer. Elect a driver training course at court when you post bond. The fee doesn't change.
What if the ticket is for 0 points?
Pay it. There's nothing for a course to keep off.
