How to send your defensive driving certificate to NDDOT

By Road Ready Safety · Checked against North Dakota law on

Short answer

Email your certificate to drs@nd.gov, or mail it to the NDDOT Driver License Division, 608 East Boulevard Avenue, Bismarck, ND 58505-0700. Course providers don't report completions in North Dakota, so nothing happens to your points until you send it. If you elected the course at court, NDDOT needs it within 30 days of your election.

Where do I send my certificate?

NDDOT says approved courses are "submitted to DRS@ND.GOV." Email the PDF as an attachment. You can also mail a copy to:

NDDOT Driver License Division 608 East Boulevard Avenue Bismarck, ND 58505-0700

Why doesn't the course provider send it?

North Dakota has no reporting system for providers. The law puts it on the driver: the reduction happens "when the licensee mails or delivers a certificate to the director." We don't send yours, and no other provider sends theirs.

What should the email say?

Keep it short, and put your identifying details in the message:

Subject: Defensive driving certificate, [your full name]

Attached is my certificate of completion for an approved defensive driving course. Please apply it to my record [as a 3-point reduction / for my in-lieu election made on (date) in (court)].

Name as on license: Date of birth: Driver license number: Phone:

Say which of the two you want. If you elected the course at court, give the date and the court.

Is there a deadline?

For the 3-point reduction, no.

For an in-lieu election, yes. The points are kept off only "if proof of completion of the course is presented to the department within thirty days after the individual notifies the court of the election." Send it the day you pass. The 30-day deadline.

How do I know NDDOT got it?

Keep the sent email. After a couple of weeks, order a $3 limited record online and look at your point total. If nothing changed, call 701-328-2604.

Where do I get the certificate?

From your course. Ours is ready to download from your account as a PDF the moment you pass the final exam, and we email you the link. One duplicate is free within 30 days if you lose it.

What if I have 12 or more points?

Send it anyway. NDDOT applies the 3-point reduction after you serve the suspension.
