Stop sign and red light tickets in North Dakota: points and fees
By Road Ready Safety · Checked against North Dakota law on
Short answer
A stop sign or yield sign ticket is 2 points and a $40 fee. A red light ticket is 2 points and $20, or $50 if it involved failing to yield to a pedestrian. Both are worth fewer than 5 points, so you can elect a course at court to keep the points off.

| Violation | State fee |
|---|---|
| Stop sign or yield sign (NDCC 39-10-24, 39-10-44) | $40 |
| Traffic signal (NDCC 39-10-05) | $20 |
| Traffic signal, failing to yield to a pedestrian | $50 |
These are the state fees in NDCC 39-06.1-06. A city ordinance can set a different amount, so check your citation.
Where do I have to stop at a stop sign?
At the marked stop line. If there isn't one, before the crosswalk. If there's no crosswalk either, at "the point nearest the intersecting roadway where the driver has a view of approaching traffic."
After stopping, you yield to any vehicle in the intersection or close enough to be an immediate hazard.
What does a yield sign require?
Slowing to a reasonable speed, and stopping if safety requires it. The law adds that if you pass a yield sign without stopping and collide with a vehicle in the intersection, the collision is "prima facie evidence" that you failed to yield.
Can I keep the 2 points off?
Yes. Tell the court you elect a driver training course when you post bond, then get the certificate to NDDOT within 30 days. How to elect it.
Should I?
It depends on your record. Two points clear in six months without a course. You get one election every 12 months, and you may want it for a bigger ticket.
If you're at 10 points, use it. Two more is a suspension.
