What are Missouri's point thresholds?

|---|---|---|
| 4 | 12 months | The Department of Revenue mails you a point accumulation advisory letter |
| 8 | 18 months | Suspension: 30 days the first time, 60 the second, 90 the third and after |
| 12 | 12 months | Revocation for one year |
| 18 | 24 months | Revocation for one year |
| 24 | 36 months | Revocation for one year |
These are in RSMo 302.304. Points count from the date of conviction.
How fast do points add up?
Most moving violations are 2 points. Speeding is 3 points under state law and 2 under a city or county ordinance. So:
- Two tickets in a year can reach 4 and bring the warning letter.
- Three state speeding tickets in 18 months is 9, which is a suspension.
The serious offenses reach a threshold in one conviction. A first DWI is 8 points. Driving while suspended and leaving the scene under state law are 12. Points by violation has the chart.
What does a suspension cost me?
Thirty days without driving the first time, a $20 reinstatement fee, and an SR-22 insurance filing that you keep for two years. If you don't file the SR-22, the suspension runs two years. See suspended for points.
What does a revocation cost me?
A year without a license, the same fee and SR-22, and then the complete driver exam again.
How do points come off?
Each year you drive without a new moving-violation conviction:
- After one year, your total drops by a third.
- After two years, what's left drops by half.
- After three years, the rest is removed.
After a suspension or revocation ends, your total is set to 4.
Where does the Driver Improvement Program fit?
It keeps the points from a new ticket from being added, if the court approves it and you finish an 8-hour course within 60 days of your conviction. It doesn't remove points you already have. You can use it once in any 36 months.
If you have 6 points and a new 2-point ticket, that ticket is the one that suspends you. With the program, you stay at 6.
What should I do today?
- Check your points. Call 573-526-2407 any time.
- If a ticket is pending, ask the court about the program before you plead or pay.
- If you're already suspended, read your notice. The program isn't part of reinstatement.
