What to Expect
Everything you need to know about the North Dakota process.
North Dakota’s insurance premium reduction is written into the Century Code, NDCC 26.1-25-04.1. Here is what it gives you and what it does not:
Your insurer must offer a premium reduction
Every auto insurer’s North Dakota rate filing must provide an appropriate reduction in premium for the principal operator of a vehicle who completes a crash prevention course approved by the superintendent of the Highway Patrol. How much is each insurer’s call; the law sets no percentage.
It lasts at least two years, three if you are 55 or older
The reduction runs for at least two years after you complete the course. A driver fifty-five or older is entitled to three years. Both periods come from the statute, not from us.
It applies to one vehicle, and some policies are excluded
The reduction goes on the vehicle you principally operate: a private passenger car, or a pickup or van under 10,000 pounds that is not used for hauling goods. It does not apply if your rate is experience-rated or your policy already carries a driver education reduction.
It must show on your bill as its own line
The statute says the reduction must be separately disclosed, and your premium billing must show it for the person who earned it. If your next bill does not show it, call your agent with the certificate in hand.
You send the certificate to your insurer
The course sponsor issues the certificate that is the basis for the reduction. We issue yours the moment you pass, in the form the Highway Patrol approves. There is no state reporting system; you deliver it to your agent or insurer.
It does not touch your driving record
This course lowers a premium. It takes no points off and keeps no ticket’s points off; that is a separate course under NDDOT’s point reduction program, and we offer that one too.
How to check we are on the list
The Highway Patrol’s online course list shows us as Road Ready Driving Instruction, with our phone number, approved through October 31, 2028. Your insurer can check it at statepatrol.nd.gov.
Eight short modules that cover every subject the Highway Patrol's rule names, from the cost of crashes to passing on a two-lane road.
Introduction and Orientation
What crashes cost all of us, why most of them are preventable, and the mindset that makes the next four hours worth it.
Traffic Laws and Why They Matter
Right-of-way, speed, signs, signals, markings, turns, roundabouts and the rules drivers most often get wrong.
Defensive Driving Techniques
Scanning, space, following distance, hazard perception, adverse conditions and a checklist you can actually use.
The Psychology of Driving
Attention, attitude, age and crash risk, road rage, the myth of multitasking and the three kinds of distraction.
Impaired Driving
Alcohol, drugs, prescriptions, fatigue, the human and financial cost, and the plan you make before the first drink.
Sharing the Road
Pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycles, large trucks, school buses, emergency vehicles and work zones.
Crash Dynamics and Avoidance
What happens in a collision, what to do when a wheel drops off the pavement, and the seconds that avoid it.
The Vehicle and Driving Environment
Maintenance, safety equipment, passing on a two-lane road, weather, animals, night driving and road types.
The final exam
25 questions; 18 correct passes. Unlimited retakes, no waiting period. Different questions each time.

Contact Support →Once you pass, your certificate of completion is ready to download right away.
Send it to your insurer
Email the PDF to your agent, or upload it where your insurer keeps documents. Ask them to apply the crash prevention course reduction under NDCC 26.1-25-04.1.
Check your next bill
The reduction must appear as a separate line. If it is missing, that is the call to make, not a reason to retake anything.
Mark the end date
Two years from your completion date, or three if you were fifty-five or older. Most drivers retake an approved course before it runs out; ask your insurer how far ahead they accept a new certificate.
Why we built Road Ready Safety
Our goal is simple: fair, transparent, state-approved courses for North Dakotans, plus plain-English guides so nobody is left confused, frustrated or upset about what their state requires.
A lot of drivers have had bad experiences with surprise fees, confusing options and no one to help. Our refund policy is compliant and clear, because we want to earn back the trust those experiences cost.
We hope you leave with a great course and a great experience, and that you trust us enough to tell your friends.
The Road Ready Safety teamFrequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the North Dakota Insurance Course.
How much will my premium go down?
That is your insurer's number, not ours. The law requires "an appropriate reduction in premium charges" and leaves the amount to each company's rate filing. If the figure matters to you, ask your agent before you enroll. We do not promise any amount.
How long does the reduction last?
At least two years from the date you complete the course. If you are fifty-five or older when you complete it, three years. Both periods are written into NDCC 26.1-25-04.1.
Who qualifies?
The principal operator of a private passenger vehicle, or a pickup or van under 10,000 pounds that is not used for hauling goods, insured in North Dakota. The reduction does not apply if your rate is experience-rated or your policy already carries a driver education reduction. On a policy with several vehicles, it applies to the one you principally drive.
Will my insurer accept this course?
The statute applies to every insurer's North Dakota rate filing, and it names courses approved by the superintendent of the Highway Patrol. Ours is built to the Patrol's curriculum rule and our approval status is shown at the top of every page. Insurers can still ask for the certificate in their own way, so ask your agent how they want it.
Is this the point reduction course?
No. This course lowers your premium; it does not change your driving record. Taking three points off, or keeping a new ticket's points off, is a separate course under NDDOT's point reduction program. We offer that one too, at roadreadysafety.com/north-dakota.
Do I need a ticket to take it?
No. Any North Dakota driver can take the course, with or without a ticket, and most people take it simply to lower their premium.
How do I get the reduction?
Finish the course, download your certificate, and give it to your agent or upload it where your insurer asks. Then read your next bill: the law says the reduction must be shown separately. If it is not there, call your agent with the certificate in hand.
How long does the course take?
Four hours, self-paced. Most people finish in one or two evenings. There is no deadline; the reduction simply starts from the date you finish.
What is the final exam like?
Twenty-five questions, eighteen correct to pass. Unlimited retakes with different questions and no waiting period. There are no quizzes between modules.
Is it really $24.99?
Yes. The certificate, unlimited retakes and support are inside that number. There is no processing fee and no upgraded version of the course.
Can I get a refund?
Yes, in full, at any time before you complete the course. After you pass the exam and the certificate is issued, no refund is available.
What happens when the two or three years are up?
The reduction ends. The law ties it to completing an approved course, so most drivers take the course again before the period runs out. Ask your insurer how far ahead they will accept a new certificate.
Can I do this on my phone?
Yes. The course and exam work on a phone, and your progress saves the moment you leave.
Is this a Highway Patrol course?
No. The Highway Patrol approves courses offered by private providers. We are a private company; our approval status is shown at the top of every page, and you can confirm it on the Patrol's list of approved online courses.
