Fifty-five or older in North Dakota? Your insurance premium reduction lasts three years

By Road Ready Safety · Last reviewed by Road Ready Safety, against the Century Code, the Administrative Code and the Highway Patrol’s pages

Short answer

Yes. Under NDCC 26.1-25-04.1 a driver fifty-five or older who successfully completes an approved motor vehicle accident prevention course is entitled to a three-year insurance premium reduction, rather than the two years every other driver gets. There is no separate senior course in North Dakota; it is the same Highway Patrol-approved course and the same certificate.

The sentence that gives you the extra year

NDCC 26.1-25-04.1 ends with one line most summaries leave out: "A driver fifty-five years of age or older who successfully completes an approved motor vehicle accident prevention course is entitled to a three-year insurance premium reduction."

Everyone else gets at least two years. You get three, from the same course.

There is no "senior course" to find

Other states run separate mature-driver programs. North Dakota does not. The Highway Patrol approves motor vehicle crash prevention courses under NDAC 38-08, and the age rule lives in the insurance statute, not in the course. Take any approved course at fifty-five or older, and the three-year period is yours.

So the course you want is the same one a 30-year-old takes: four hours, built to the Patrol's curriculum rule, with a certificate at the end.

Tell your agent your age

When you send the certificate, say that you were fifty-five or older when you completed it. The reduction must appear as its own line on your bill, and the period should run three years. An agent who keys in the default two-year term is easy to correct while the certificate is in front of them, and harder a year later.

What the course covers for an experienced driver

The rule requires a section on the problems associated with younger or older drivers, and ours treats both ends honestly. Per licensed driver, people 65 and older are among the least likely to be in a fatal crash. What changes with age is how much harm the same crash does, and a few specific situations: night glare, left turns across traffic, medication side effects. The course is about adjusting for those, not about being told you drive badly.

Three years, then what?

The reduction ends when the period does. Most drivers take an approved course again before it runs out. How to time it.

The course is four hours online and $24.99, certificate included. It does not take points off a driving record; that is a different course.

This guide is part of North Dakota's insurance premium reduction: how it works and who qualifies. If you want the lower premium, the course for the two-year premium reduction is 4 hours online for $24.99.

Quick answers

Is there a special 55+ course in North Dakota?

No. The three-year period comes from your age at completion, not from a different course. Any course approved by the Highway Patrol under NDAC 38-08 earns it.

What if I turn 55 during the two years?

The statute ties the three years to completing the course at fifty-five or older. The safe reading is that a course finished before your birthday earns two years. If it matters, ask your insurer whether they would honor a certificate dated after you turn 55.

Does my spouse get three years too?

Only if they complete the course themselves and are fifty-five or older. The reduction goes to the principal operator of each vehicle, one certificate per driver.
