How many points is a speeding ticket in Missouri?
By Road Ready Safety · Checked against Missouri law on
Short answer
A speeding ticket is 3 points if you're convicted under Missouri state law and 2 points under a city or county ordinance. Speeding by 5 mph or less over the limit carries no points. The number of points doesn't go up with your speed, but the fine does.
- State law speeding
- 3 points
- City or county ordinance
- 2 points
- 5 mph over or less
- No points
- If it caused injury or damage
- 2 more points, if the court certifies it
How many points does Missouri give for speeding?
Three points for a conviction under state law and 2 points under a county or municipal ordinance (RSMo 302.302.1(2)). The Department of Revenue's points chart, Form 899, shows the same numbers.
How do I know which one I was charged with?
Read the citation. It names the law you're charged under. A state charge cites the Missouri statutes, usually RSMo 304.010. A city or county charge cites a local ordinance number and sends you to a municipal court.
Does going faster mean more points?
No. Ten over and twenty-four over are the same number of points. What changes is the fine, and at 20 mph or more over the limit the charge rises from a class C misdemeanor to a class B misdemeanor (RSMo 304.010.11). Fines are in what a Missouri speeding ticket costs.
Is there a speed that carries no points?
Yes. Missouri law says "no points shall be assessed" for speeding that is over the posted limit by five miles per hour or less (RSMo 304.009). That ticket is an infraction. You still owe the fine and court costs.
Can a speeding ticket carry more than 3 points?
Yes, if someone was hurt or property was damaged. The court can certify that, and the Department of Revenue adds 2 points (RSMo 302.302.3).
How do I keep speeding points off my license?
Ask the court for the Driver Improvement Program before you plead guilty or pay. Speeding is one of the violations the program covers. If the court approves it and you finish an 8-hour course within 60 days of your conviction, the points are not added.
Three things rule it out: a commercial driver license, an out-of-state license, or having used the program in the last 36 months.
How close is one speeding ticket to a suspension?
Missouri suspends at 8 points in 18 months. Three state speeding tickets in a year and a half is 9 points. The Department of Revenue sends a warning letter at 4 points in 12 months, which is two tickets for most drivers. What 4, 8 and 12 points do has the full table.
