How to get a Texas driver license at 18 or older: seven steps, and one people do too early

At 18 or older, a first Texas driver license takes seven steps and a $33 DPS fee. The six-hour course is required only if you are 18 through 24. One step carries a 90-day clock, and doing it before you book the road test is how people lose the certificate. The order that avoids it is below.

What are the steps to get a Texas driver license at 18?

Seven, and they work best in this order. Steps four and five are the pair people swap.

  1. Work out whether you need driver education. If you are 18 through 24 and this is your first driver license, you need the six-hour adult course. If you are 25 or older, or you hold a valid license from another U.S. state, you do not.
  2. Gather your documents. Proof of identity, proof of lawful presence or U.S. citizenship, proof of Texas residency, your Social Security number, and — if you own a vehicle — Texas registration and proof of insurance. DPS has a REAL ID Document Check tool that builds the list for your situation.
  3. Take the six-hour course, if it applies to you. Online and self-paced. Under §521.167 it satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam, once a licensed driver education instructor confirms you passed those parts.
  4. Book your driving skills test. Every DPS office is appointment only. Appointments open up to 6 months ahead, and the median wait for a skills test was 20 days when we last read the DPS report.
  5. Watch the 1-hour Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) video. Required before the skills test for everyone 18 and over. The certificate is valid 90 days, so watch it after you know your appointment date, not before.
  6. Go to your appointment. Application form, documents, biometrics, photo, the $33 fee, vision test, then the knowledge test if it has not been waived, then the driving skills test.
  7. Leave with a temporary license. You get a paper temporary license the same day. Check every field on it before you leave. The card arrives by mail in about 2–3 weeks.

Which step do people do too early?

The Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) video. Its certificate has to be dated within 90 days of your driving skills test, and the wait for that test can be long. When we read the DPS report on 2026-10-13, 83 of 218 offices were more than a month out.

So book the appointment first, then fit the course and the video around it. Watching the video before you have a date is how ITD certificates expire. We wrote that up in detail in the 90-day certificate trap.

What documents do you bring to DPS?

Proof of who you are, that you are here lawfully and that you live in Texas, your Social Security number, and the certificates for the steps you have finished. DPS turns people away for missing paperwork, and a lost appointment is expensive when the next one is weeks out. Its own REAL ID Document Check tool builds a personalized list. The general shape is below.

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship, or of lawful presence if you are not a citizen
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of Texas residency
  • Your Social Security number
  • Texas registration for every vehicle you own, and proof of insurance, or a statement that you do not own one
  • Your Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) certificate, dated within 90 days of the skills test
  • Your driver education certificate, if you are 18 through 24

The full list is in what to bring to your DPS appointment.

How long does it take, start to finish?

About as long as the wait for your driving skills test. The course is six hours and you control when you do it. The appointment is the part you do not control. When we read the DPS wait-time report on 2026-10-13, the median wait for a non-commercial driving skills test across 218 offices was 20 days. The first-license transaction itself moved faster, a median of 7 days.

Waits vary by office and by day. To see where the road test is closest, check DPS wait times by office. After you pass, the card arrives by mail in about 2–3 weeks.

Common questions

How do I get a Texas driver license at 18 or older?

In seven steps. Check whether driver education applies to you (required at 18 through 24 for a first license), gather your identity, lawful presence and Texas residency documents, take the six-hour course if you need it, book a skills test appointment, watch the Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) video within 90 days of that appointment, attend and pass, then wait about 2–3 weeks for the card.

What are the requirements to get a Texas driver license at 18?

A first license at 18 through 24 needs the six-hour adult driver education certificate, an Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) certificate dated within 90 days of your driving skills test, proof of identity, lawful presence or U.S. citizenship and Texas residency, your Social Security number, and the $33 fee. At DPS you then pass the vision test, the knowledge test (the course satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam) and the driving skills test.

How much does a Texas driver license cost?

The DPS fee for a new Class C license at ages 18 to 84 is $33, and the license lasts 8 years. A $1 administrative fee is included in that, and is not charged on mail transactions. Any driver education course is a separate cost.

How long does the whole process take?

About as long as your wait for a driving skills test. When we read the DPS report the median wait was 20 days, with 83 of 218 offices more than a month out. The course is six hours, so book the appointment first and fit the course around it.

What is on the Texas driver license exam?

Tex. Transp. Code §521.161 requires a test of vision, ability to identify highway signs, knowledge of Texas traffic laws, motorists' rights and responsibilities in relation to bicyclists, and the effect of distracted driving, plus a demonstration of your ability to drive.

Can I do any of it online?

Only the driver education course. DPS offers all in-office driver license and ID services by appointment only, and the vision test and driving skills test happen in person. Some renewals can be done online, but a first license cannot.
