What does it cost to get a Texas license as an adult, all in?

Two numbers for most people: the DPS license fee and the course. The DPS fee is the same whatever you do. The course is the only part you shop for, and whether you need it depends on one thing.

Which one is you?

Required. Texas will not issue a first license under 25 without it (Transp. Code §521.1601). What the law requires at 18 to 24

Taking the driving test?

Then you also watch Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD), a one-hour DPS video. It is free, and its certificate is good for 90 days, so watch it near your test date. How ITAD works

Your total with Road Ready Safety$72.95
DPS license fee, paid to DPS, good for 8 years$33

The course, exam and certificate included$39.95

One optional cost: a driving test at a DPS-certified third-party school instead of the DPS queue. The school sets that fee. When it is worth it

What's the cheapest an adult drivers ed course can legally be?

There is no floor. Texas sets a minimum price for the course that dismisses a ticket, and sets none for adult driver education. A provider can put any number on the ad. Whether that number is the number on the receipt is up to the provider, and that is where the lower numbers come from.

Is there a free course?

No. A course that issues the ADE-1317 has to be TDLR-approved, and approved providers charge for it. The free thing in this process is the ITAD video, and that is DPS, not a course.

What is the only number that counts?

The one on the receipt, with the certificate in it. A course advertised for less than ours that charges for the certificate at the end costs more than ours. What the certificate is

What gets added after the advertised price?

Six lines can sit between the ad and your total. Read the first one twice. Every course on this list is the same six hours set by the state, so the price is the only thing that varies.

Certificate or “handling” feeWatch this oneA line added at the end for the one document you came for. The most common way a low price stops being low.
A sale price with a timerRead the small printThe crossed-out number is the real one. The timer resets. Ask what the price is tomorrow.
Rush or “instant” certificateCheck itThe ADE-1317 is signed by a licensed instructor, so no one hands it over the second you finish. Paying to speed that up is paying for a promise.
Retake or extension feesRead firstThe state allows three attempts at the final exam. Some checkouts charge for the second one, or to reopen a course after its window closes.
Audio, video or “premium”OptionalA higher tier of the same six hours. Same certificate, same DPS.
Trials that renewUncheck itA roadside or insurance trial bundled into checkout, free for a month, then billed monthly until you cancel.
One question for any checkout

"When I pass, is my signed certificate in this price, and is this price the same tomorrow?"

Why $39.95 and not a lower number?

We are not the lowest number you will see on an ad. We are the number you will see on your receipt. The course is the six hours the state sets, the same for every approved provider. What you are paying for is everything around it, and ours is in the price.

  • One price, every day. $39.95 today, $39.95 next week. No timer, no crossed-out number.
  • The certificate is in it. Signed by a licensed Texas driver education instructor and emailed to you. Nothing to add at the end.
  • The exam is in it. Three attempts, as the state allows. Pass it and the course satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam.
  • Nothing renews. No trial, no subscription, no box to uncheck.
  • A way out. If you’re not satisfied, you can request a full refund before you complete the course or receive your certificate.

A review of our Texas driving safety course. The adult driver education course is new, so its own reviews come as students finish it.

Who should not buy it

Anyone surrendering a valid, unexpired license from another U.S. state. DPS waives the course for you, so $39.95 would buy nothing. Under 18, you take the teen course, which is longer and includes supervised driving. Check whether you need it first

Quick answers

How much is adult drivers ed in Texas?

Providers set their own price; Texas does not set a minimum for this course. Ours is $39.95, with the exam and the certificate included and nothing added at checkout. With the $33 DPS license fee, getting licensed at 18 to 24 comes to about $73 all in.

Is there a free adult drivers ed course in Texas?

No approved course is free. The free part of the process is Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD), a one-hour DPS video that everyone taking the driving test watches. It is separate from the course and does not replace it.

Why do some courses cost more at checkout than on the ad?

Three things get added after the advertised price: a certificate or handling fee, a sale price that expires on a timer, and a trial that renews monthly. The number that counts is the one on your receipt.

Does Road Ready Safety charge anything after $39.95?

No. $39.95 covers the 6-hour course, three attempts at the final exam, your signed ADE-1317 certificate by email, and 90 days to finish. No delivery, processing, retake or renewal fee.

Do I have to pay for the course if I am 25 or older?

No. At 25 and over the course is optional. DPS says it is highly recommended for first-time applicants. The difference is where you take the sign and traffic law parts of the knowledge exam: in the course at home, or at the DPS office.

How much is the Texas driver license itself?

$33 for a new Class C license at ages 18 to 84, valid 8 years. That includes a $1 administrative fee. A replacement is $11.
