No course replaces the Texas driving test, and the median DPS office books it 20 days out

No course replaces the Texas driving test. Book it with DPS or a DPS-certified school, and bring an ITAD certificate dated within 90 days and a registered, insured car. On October 13, 2026 the median DPS office was 20 days out for the road test; below is how to get in sooner and which part of the DPS exam the course does cover.

Does adult drivers ed replace the Texas driving test?

No. The driving test is a demonstration of whether you can operate a car, and no amount of reading establishes that. Expect to take it, and plan the rest of your timeline around it.

§521.161 lists what the DPS examination covers: vision, highway signs, traffic laws, bicyclist rights and responsibilities, distracted driving, and a driving skills test. Under §521.167, passing an approved course satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam. It says nothing about the rest, so you take those yourself, the driving test included.

What do you need to bring to the driving test?

An Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) certificate dated within 90 days, your documents, and a vehicle that is registered, insured and in safe working order. DPS will not test you without the certificate. Most people use their own car, and a vehicle that fails a basic safety check ends the appointment before it starts. The document list is on what to bring to DPS.

How do you book the driving test, and how long is the wait?

Book it as a DPS appointment, since every office is appointment only, or with a DPS-certified school. DPS publishes how far out each office is booking, refreshed daily. On 2026-10-13, across the 218 offices offering a non-commercial road test:

  • Median wait: 20 days
  • Over a month out: 83 offices (38%)
  • Longest in the state: 94 days, at Pearsall
  • Quickest: 2 days

Your office is in the full table. The spread is wide enough that where you book matters more than when.

How can you get a driving test sooner?

Use a third-party school, catch a same-day appointment, or book a different office.

  • Third-party skills testing. DPS certifies driver education schools to give the road test, and says the program exists partly to cut the wait. Fees are the school’s own. See how it works.
  • Same-day appointments. Every office except the Carrollton Mega Center holds a limited number, first come first served. They go quickly.
  • A different office. DPS’s published estimate excludes cancellations, so the real wait is often shorter, and a neighboring office is sometimes weeks quicker outright.

Can your ITAD certificate expire before the test?

Yes, if you watch the video more than 90 days before your test date. You cannot take the test without an Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) certificate dated within 90 days. With queues this long that is a live risk, and the fix is to book the test first and watch the video second. The arithmetic is on the 90-day certificate trap.

Common questions

Does adult drivers ed get me out of the driving test?

No. The course satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam. The driving skills test is a separate requirement under §521.161 and no online course removes it. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something they cannot deliver.

How long is the wait for a driving test in Texas?

A median of 20 days across the 218 DPS offices that offer one, on 2026-10-13. 83 of those offices were more than a month out and the longest was 94 days at Pearsall.

What do I need to bring to the driving test?

Your Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) certificate dated within 90 days, your documents, and a vehicle that is registered, insured and road-legal. DPS will not test you without the certificate.

How do I book a Texas driving test?

Book it as a DPS appointment, since every DPS driver license office is appointment only, or book it with a DPS-certified third-party school. The school sets its own fee.

Can I use my own car for the Texas driving test?

Yes, and most people do. It has to be registered, insured, and in safe working order. A vehicle that fails a basic safety check ends the appointment before it starts.

Is there a way around the DPS queue?

Yes, third-party skills testing. DPS certifies driver education schools to administer the Class C road test, and says in its own words that this "reduces the time you must wait to take your driving test". Fees are set by the school, not DPS.
