To Request Approval — Submit These

  • Completed JP1 Defensive Safety Course Plea Form (nolo contendere plea)
  • Copy of valid Texas driver's license (non-CDL)
  • Copy of proof of financial responsibility (insurance card)

After Completing the Course — Submit These

  • DSC certificate of completion (Texas Education Agency-approved course)
  • Certified Texas DPS Driving Record (Type 3A, $10 from DPS — confirms no DSC used in prior 12 months)

Important Deadlines & Local Rules

  • Request deadline: Before the appearance date on the citation
  • Completion window: 90 days from the date the plea is accepted (deferral period).
  • CDL/CLP holders are NOT eligible for DSC dismissal.
  • Ineligible if you completed a DSC for another ticket within the preceding 12 months, or are currently taking a course for another violation.
  • Ineligible for speeding 25 mph over the limit or 95 mph or over.
  • Ineligible for reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, passing a school bus, fleeing/eluding a police officer, failure to give information at an accident scene, or a serious traffic violation under Tex. Transp. Code Ch. 522.
