What the Texas Defensive Driving Course Actually Looks Like: Every Module, the Timers, the Quizzes and the Certificate
The Road Ready Safety Texas course is seventeen short reading modules with images, two built-in 30-minute breaks, page timers that satisfy the state's six-hour rule, chapter quizzes with unlimited attempts instead of a final exam, and a certificate that downloads the moment you finish. It runs on a phone, saves your place, and can be done in one sitting or several.
Every approved Texas course teaches the same thirteen state-required topics, so what differs is the experience. This page shows ours module by module, exactly as students see it, so you know what you are buying before you pay $28.
How does the course run?
- Short, focused lessons. Plain language, real Texas examples, and quick check-in questions to keep you moving. No narration, nothing you must watch in real time.
- Page timers. Some pages require a minimum viewing time; when the timer ends, the Next button activates. That is how an online course satisfies TDLR's six-hour rule (at least five hours of instruction plus breaks). Reading faster does not shorten it, and you cannot skip ahead: navigation unlocks as you progress.
- Two scheduled breaks. 30 minutes after Module 6 and 30 minutes after Module 11. Step away; your place is saved.
- Chapter quizzes, no final exam. TDLR requires 70% mastery on chapter exams or a comprehensive exam. We use chapter quizzes with unlimited attempts, so a wrong answer costs you a retake, not the course.
- Any device, progress saved. Start on a laptop, finish on your phone. If a page ever seems stuck, refresh once; your time and place are preserved.
- Support. Phone and email, including weekends, for anything from a typo in your name to a court that wants something unusual.
What is in each module?
Seventeen modules and two breaks, in the order you will see them. Modules 9 through 15 are the topics Texas specifically requires every driving safety course to cover.
Module 1: Course Introduction & Orientation
How the course runs, the timers, and the mindset the state wants you to leave with.
Module 2: The Traffic Safety Problem
Texas crash patterns, right-of-way, speed limits and school zones, signs and signals, turning and lane changes, seat belts, car seats and the texting law.
Module 3: Factors Influencing Driver Performance
Fatigue, vision, health, emotions and the physical limits every driver has.
Module 4: The Psychology of Driving
Attitude, aggression and distraction, and how to stay mentally ready at the wheel.
Module 5: Alcohol, Drugs & Driving
Effects, Texas law, and safer choices.
Module 6: Vulnerable Road Users
Pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, school buses, emergency vehicles and rail crossings.

Module 7: Crash Dynamics, Avoidance & Emergencies
What happens in a collision, following distance, and what to do when something goes wrong.
Module 8: Sharing the Road & Environmental Factors

A Texas-required topic: the dangers and the penalties.

What happens at the end?
When Module 17 closes, your uniform certificate of completion downloads immediately as a PDF with both copies: the court copy you submit for dismissal and the insurance copy you can send to your carrier for a discount. There is no delivery fee and no upsell screen. Your certificate number is in the CP1234-######## format and can be validated at TDLR's DESSearch; TDLR notes new certificates can take up to five days to appear there, so submit with a cushion. What the course is not
It is not a video course, it is not narrated, and it is not in Spanish yet (see our Spanish page). It is not faster than six hours, because no approved course is. And it is not a shortcut around the court: you still have to request the course by your appearance date and submit the certificate on time, which the ticket dismissal guide walks through. If you want humor or full-screen video, a licensed provider that offers those is a legitimate choice. If you want to read at your own pace, finish in an evening, and have the certificate in hand the moment you do, this is that course.

Is the Texas defensive driving course video or reading?
Ours is reading, with images and short check-in questions, at your own pace. There is no narration to sit through and nothing you have to watch in real time; you read each page and the timer runs alongside. If you strongly prefer video, other licensed providers offer video-format courses, and they are the same six hours.
Is there a final exam?
No. TDLR allows either chapter exams or one comprehensive exam, at 70% mastery. We use short chapter quizzes with unlimited attempts, so you cannot fail out of the course. You retake a quiz until you pass it and move on.
How long is each module?
The course is six hours in total with at least five hours of instruction, spread across seventeen modules and two 30-minute breaks. Individual pages carry a minimum viewing time; when a page's timer ends, the Next button activates. Modules vary in length, and you can see your progress as you go.
Can I do the course on my phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer, and your progress saves automatically across devices, so you can start on one and finish on another.
Can I stop and come back later?
Yes, as often as you like. Progress and time already completed are saved. The only clock that matters is your court's deadline, usually 90 days from approval.
What do I get at the end?
