Texas Defensive Driving Course in Spanish: What the Law Allows, What Counts in Court, and What to Do Next

Yes, Texas allows a TDLR-approved driving safety course to be offered in Spanish, and a certificate from a Spanish-language course dismisses a ticket exactly like one from an English course. The rule is 16 TAC §84.504: a licensed provider may offer the course in a language other than English if it affirms the translation is true and correct and the department approves the course before use. The certificate is the same uniform certificate either way.

Our own course is English-only today. We are evaluating a Spanish version, which needs a certified translation and TDLR approval before we can sell it. This page tells Spanish-speaking drivers what they can do right now, includes a Spanish summary of the court process, and lets you tell us you want the Spanish course so we can gauge demand honestly.

It can be, and several licensed providers offer one. TDLR does not license a language; it licenses the provider and approves the course. A provider that wants to teach in Spanish submits the translated course with a written affirmation that the translation is true and correct, and TDLR approves it like any other course change (16 TAC §84.504). So the two questions to ask any Spanish course are the same two you would ask any course: does the provider show a current CP number, and was this version approved? Yes. The court receives the same uniform certificate of completion, with the same CP###-######## number, and validates it in the same TDLR system. Nothing on the certificate records the language of instruction. If you read basic English, yes. Our course is text-based and self-paced, with no final exam, unlimited attempts on each module's questions, and support by phone and email. You can stop and resume as often as you like within your court's deadline. What we will not tell you is that it is the same as a Spanish course: if reading English is a struggle, a Spanish-language course from a licensed provider is the better choice for you, and the certificate is just as good.

The same way as everyone else, and language is rarely the obstacle. The request is a short written statement or a checkbox on the court's plea form, submitted on or before the appearance date; many larger courts publish their forms in Spanish, and clerks in most Texas courts handle Spanish requests daily. A Spanish version means a certified translation of the full six-hour script and every question, a signed declaration to TDLR that the translation is true and correct, and department approval before the first student enrolls.
