The Texas adult drivers ed final exam: 40 questions, 70% on each part, no answer key
The Texas adult drivers ed final exam is 40 questions, 20 on highway signs and 20 on traffic laws. You need 70% on each part, with 3 attempts. Pass it and the course satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam. A retake is a different exam, you never see an answer key, and one module carries the material for half the questions; all three are below.
How many questions are on the final exam, and what score passes?
40 questions in two parts, and you need 70% on each part.
| Part | Questions | To pass |
|---|---|---|
| Part 1 — Highway signs | 20 | 70% (14 of 20) |
| Part 2 — Traffic laws | 20 | 70% (14 of 20) |
Texas requires the two parts to be scored separately and drawn from two separate question banks. Signs and laws are the two things §521.161 makes DPS test, so the course exam that satisfies those portions covers them in equal measure.
What happens if I fail, and do I see the right answers?
You can retake it, up to 3 attempts in all, with different questions on a retest, and you never see an answer key.
- No answer key. The rules require the course not to identify the correct answer on the final examination. You are told how you did, not which ones you missed.
- A retake is a different exam. If you miss more than 30%, the retest draws different questions from the bank, so failing once does not show you the next set.
- 3 attempts, then the course. Fail three times and you fail the course rather than trying again indefinitely. You may review the material between attempts.
How do I pass it on the first try?
Give Module 4 your full attention and use the 7 knowledge checks as practice. Module 4 is where the signs material lives and where the sign half of the exam comes from. The knowledge checks cover the same ground, and they do show you what you got wrong.
There is no trick. Texas requires the questions to be unanswerable without having done the instruction.
What does passing do for my DPS test?
Passing it satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam, once a licensed driver education instructor confirms you passed those portions. Texas gives the provider up to 15 working days to issue your ADE-1317 certificate. The vision test and the driving skills test stay at DPS; the written test page sets out exactly which parts are which.
Common questions
How many questions are on the Texas adult drivers ed final exam?
40, in two parts: 20 questions on highway signs and 20 on traffic laws. You need 70% on each part. Those are the same two subjects §521.161 requires DPS to test, which is why passing them here satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam.
What score do I need to pass?
70% on each part, taken separately, so passing one does not carry the other. Texas sets mastery at 70% for this examination.
How many times can I take it?
3 attempts. If you miss more than 30% of the questions on an attempt, the course retests you using different questions, and you may review the material first. Fail three times and you fail the course.
Does it show me the right answers?
No. Texas requires that the course not identify the correct answer on the final examination, so you get your result without an answer key. Knowledge checks during the course work differently and do show you where you went wrong.
Is it open book?
No one proctors you at home, but the questions are written so the answer is not easily determined without having done the course. Texas requires that, and skimming is the reliable way to fail.
What happens after I pass?
Your certificate is issued and a licensed driver education instructor confirms you passed the highway sign and traffic law portions. That confirmation is what DPS relies on.
