Every Way to Get a Texas Traffic Ticket Dismissed
There's more than one way to make a Texas traffic ticket disappear — and the court data shows exactly how often each one actually happens. In FY2024, about 27.7% of all disposed traffic cases ended in a "compliance" dismissal, where the driver did something to earn it.
Here's every path, what it requires, and how common it is — so you can see which one fits your situation.
Eligibility for each path depends on your offense, your record, and your court. This is general information, not legal advice — confirm what's available with the court listed on your citation.
How Texas tickets actually get resolved
First, the big picture. Most cases aren't dismissed at all — about 40% are uncontested (the driver pays or pleads, which is a conviction), and roughly 9% are convicted in court. Dismissals are the minority, and they split across several distinct paths.
| Outcome (FY2024) | Cases | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Uncontested (paid / plea) | 1,574,031 | 39.9% |
| Dismissed by prosecution | 717,106 | 18.2% |
| Deferred disposition dismissal | 495,109 | 12.5% |
| Convicted by court | 359,152 | 9.1% |
| Driving safety course dismissal | 294,534 | 7.5% |
| Other Transportation Code dismissal | 257,856 | 6.5% |
| Proof-of-insurance dismissal | 41,605 | 1.1% |

1. Driving safety course (the path you control)
Complete an approved 6-hour course and meet the requirements, and the charge is dismissed and kept off your driving record under Texas law. Along with deferred disposition, it's one of the two largest dismissal paths you control, accounting for 294,534 dismissals in FY2024.
You're generally eligible if you have a valid license, proof of insurance, haven't used the course in the past 12 months, and weren't cited for an excluded offense (like speeding 25+ over). Start with the dismissal guide or check our eligibility checker.
2. Deferred disposition (probation, then dismissal)
The judge defers a finding of guilt for a set period; stay ticket-free and the charge is dismissed. It's actually the largest driver-initiated path by volume — 495,109 dismissals in FY2024 — and it's the main option when the course isn't available to you.
See how it stacks up against the course in defensive driving vs deferred disposition.
3. Proof-of-insurance and other compliance dismissals
Some charges are dismissed when you fix the underlying problem. A "no insurance" ticket can often be dismissed by showing you actually had valid coverage at the time (41,605 such dismissals in FY2024), and other Transportation Code violations — like an expired registration or license — can be dismissed once you provide proof you've corrected them (257,856 dismissals).
If your ticket is one of these, see no-insurance tickets for how the compliance dismissal works.
4. Dismissed by the prosecution
The largest single dismissal category — 717,106 cases, or 18.2% — is dismissal by the prosecution, either before or at trial. This isn't something you simply apply for; it can result from a successful challenge, a plea arrangement, or the state choosing not to pursue the case.
It's the least predictable path for a driver to rely on, which is why the course and deferred disposition — the options you control — matter most for everyday tickets.
5:26 Frequently asked questions
What are all the ways to get a Texas ticket dismissed?
The main paths are a driving safety course, deferred disposition, proof-of-insurance or other compliance dismissals, and dismissal by the prosecution. The course and deferred disposition are the two you actively initiate.
What's the most common way Texas tickets get dismissed?
By volume, dismissal by the prosecution (717,106 in FY2024) is largest, followed by deferred disposition (495,109) and the driving safety course (294,534). But the course and deferred are the paths a driver controls.
What is a compliance dismissal?
A dismissal you earn by doing something — taking a course, completing deferred disposition, or proving you fixed the issue (like showing valid insurance). Compliance dismissals were about 27.7% of disposed traffic cases in FY2024.
Can a no-insurance ticket be dismissed?
Often, yes — if you actually had valid coverage at the time, showing proof can get it dismissed. Texas courts recorded 41,605 proof-of-insurance dismissals in FY2024.
Pick the path you control
If you're eligible, the driving safety course is the most predictable way to dismiss your ticket and keep it off your record — done in one 6-hour sitting for $28.
