How to Request DSC Approval
To Request Approval — Submit These

- •Proof of Financial Responsibility / Current Insurance
After Completing the Course — Submit These
- •DSC Certificate of Completion (from a TDLR-approved driving safety course or, if on a motorcycle, a DPS-approved motorcycle operator's course)
- •Texas Driving Record — Type 3A (certified copy from Texas DPS)
Important Deadlines & Local Rules
- •On or before the appearance date shown on your citation — must be made to the Court Clerk (in person or by phone), NOT to the Judge in open court (per official FAQ: 'If you wait to ask for Defensive Driving until you are before the Judge in Court, that request will be denied')
- •You have Deadline set by court at time of approval — typically 90 days from approval date; confirm exact deadline with clerk to complete the course and submit all documents.
- •CRITICAL — Verbatim from official FAQ: 'Requests for Defensive Driving must be made to the Clerk of the Court on or before you appear for your Court setting. If you wait to ask for Defensive Driving until you are before the Judge in Court, that request will be denied.'
- •Verbatim from official DSC page: 'If you are charged with a traffic offense under Subtitle C of the Transportation Code, you may request before the appearance date on the citation, either orally or in writing, to take a driving safety course.'
- •You are NOT eligible for DSC if you: (1) requested or took a DSC within the preceding 12 months of the offense date; (2) are currently taking a DSC for another violation; (3) held or hold a CDL at time of offense or request; (4) committed the offense in a construction/maintenance zone with workers present; (5) were alleged to be speeding 25 mph or more over the speed limit; (6) were charged with passing a school bus loading/unloading children; (7) were charged with leaving the scene of an accident after causing damage; (8) were charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failing to give information or render aid.
- •Motorcycle offenders must take a DPS-approved motorcycle operator's training course — not a standard driving safety course.
