DSC Court Fees
⚠ The $144 total to take a driving safety course includes court costs plus a $10 administrative fee (the course tuition is separate).
How to Request DSC Approval
To Request Approval — Submit These
- •Proof of financial responsibility (valid auto insurance)
- •Valid Texas driver's license or permit (active military may use any state license)
- •Completed TEA-approved defensive driving course certificate (submitted upon completion)
After Completing the Course — Submit These
- •Certified Texas DPS Type 3A driving record showing no defensive driving course in the preceding 12 months (submitted upon completion)
Important Deadlines & Local Rules
- •Request deadline: Must request BEFORE the appearance date listed on the citation (court allows 20 days from ticket date to enter a written plea)
- •Completion window: 90 days from grant of DSC request.
- •Cannot use DSC if you took a defensive driving course within the last 12 months or are currently enrolled in another course for a traffic violation.
- •CDL holders (current or at time of offense) are ineligible.
- •DSC not available for: failure to provide accident information, leaving an accident scene, passing a school bus, work-zone violations with workers present, speeding 25+ mph over the limit, or speeding 95+ mph.
- •Failure to complete and submit required documents within the 90-day window results in a show cause hearing; failure to appear triggers conviction and an arrest warrant.
