DSC Court Fees
⚠ State fees are subject to change due to legislation updates. Fee must be paid before the case can be officially set up for DSC dismissal. Payment may be mailed with the request form, or paid by VISA, MasterCard, or Discover over the phone.
How to Request DSC Approval
To Request Approval — Submit These
- •Completed Defensive Driving Request form (with sworn oath/affidavit)
- •Copy of valid, non-commercial Texas driver license or permit
- •Proof of current financial responsibility (vehicle liability insurance) — policy must be in effect at the time of request; requirement cannot be waived even if defendant does not own a car
- •Payment of $144 state fees ($169 if school zone offense)
After Completing the Course — Submit These
- •After course completion — original signed 'court' copy of the Certificate of Completion from a TDLR-approved driving safety course (or approved motorcycle operator training course)
- •After course completion — original certified copy (Type 3A) of driver record from Texas DPS (NOT from third-party sources); request at Texas.gov
Important Deadlines & Local Rules
- •Within 10 business days of receiving citation (request must be received or postmarked by that date). CDL holders and out-of-state license holders do NOT qualify.
- •You have 90 days from court approval to complete the course and submit the certificate of completion and Type 3A driving record to complete the course and submit all documents.
- •YOU MUST call the court or submit the request BEFORE paying your citation online or by any other method — paying the citation first will close the case and forfeit DSC eligibility.
- •Defendants 16 years of age or younger are required to plea in open court with a parent or guardian present.
- •The plea form requires a plea of NO CONTEST or GUILTY to be eligible for the defensive driving option.
- •The sworn affidavit on the request form states the defendant is not currently taking, nor has recently completed, a DSC under Art. 45.0511 CCP that is not yet reflected on their DPS record.
