How Often Can You Take Defensive Driving in New York?

There are two different clocks, and almost everyone mixes them up. For point reduction, you can use a course once every 18 months. For the insurance discount, you retake every 36 months to keep it going. They run independently.

Here's how each one works so you time it right.

The 18-month clock (points)

You can use a PIRP course to reduce points once in any 18-month period, and the reduction only applies to convictions from the 18 months before you finish the course.

So if you took a course for point reduction recently, a second course won't reduce points again until 18 months have passed. See how point reduction works for the details.

The 36-month clock (insurance)

The insurance discount lasts three years from completion. To keep the 10% in place, you take an approved course again every 36 months.

This clock has nothing to do with points — you can renew the insurance discount even with a clean record. See how the discount works.

How to think about timing

If you're taking the course mainly for insurance, just set a reminder for every three years. If you're taking it for points after a conviction, make sure 18 months have passed since your last point-reduction course.

Many drivers simply retake every three years for the insurance discount, which also keeps a point-reduction course available whenever they happen to need it.

Frequently asked questions

How often can I take defensive driving for points in New York?

Once every 18 months. The point reduction applies only to convictions from the 18 months before you complete the course.

How often do I retake it for the insurance discount?

Every 36 months. The 10% discount lasts three years, so you retake an approved course before it lapses to keep it going.

Why are there two different time periods?

They're two separate benefits with separate rules: 18 months governs point reduction, and 36 months governs the insurance discount. They run independently of each other.

Can I renew the insurance discount with a clean record?

Yes. The insurance discount doesn't depend on having points — any licensed driver can retake the course every three years to keep the 10% reduction.

Keep your discount from lapsing

If your three years are almost up, retaking an approved course keeps the 10% going. When you're ready, we'll point you to the New York online course.
